Another show recorded out “in the field.” One reasonably quiet room, one USB mic, a few pieces of cheap software and one Apple MacBook Pro – presto! Episode 45 is born.

Today’s topic is the result of thoughts I’ve been having about my consumption of information. My learning.

I spend way yonder too much money on books. I likely read too much. Is that possible?

Unfortunately, late one night while reading a thought struck me. A question really. “What’s the last PROFOUND thing you read?”

I immediately began to catalog the variety of books I’ve read recently, starting with the most recent one going back as far as I could remember. Of the dozens of books read recently, one book kind of stood out to me for providing thought provoking ideas (and analogies). None of the books really stood out as profound.

As I am wont to do late at night, my mind grows restless (like my body). Over a week ago I was enduring such a night when I began to think about my own purchases and consumption of learning or education. I mostly thought about the ones I had purchased and wondered how many of them were really worth the money and time. I also wondered about a few I’m considering making right now. At the heart of my mental meanderings was this question, “Why do I decide to buy this particular book, or course, or seminar or conference?”

I’m not talking about the marketing, although that clearly has an affect on all of us. It wasn’t the sales letter, or sale video that caused me to wonder. It was my emotions and in particular, my expectations. What had I hoped to gain from any of these things?

While recording today’s show I did come up with a rather unique exercise. Click PLAY, listen to the show and see if this exercise might not benefit you. In a future show I’ll reveal what I learned about my own consumption of educational or learning products, including books. If you decide to join me in the exercise, I’d love to hear about your results. Leave me some audio feedback or drop me an email. Go to the CONNECT page and you’ll see how to reach me.
