This week I begin a series of shows discussing the important topic of finding and soaring with our strengths. I’ve taken the title from a 1992 book of the same title. It’s the last book listed below. And yes, it’s still being published in paperback. The book serves as a framework for this series. I originally planned to post this before releasing the first podcast in this series – but I decided to release both this post and the first episode together.
Sir Ken Robinson’s book, The Element, places such value on finding what you love most (your passion) that he subtitled the book, “How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything.”
If finding our passion changes everything – and I suspect Sir Ken is right – then don’t we owe it to ourselves to search diligently for it?
Here are some books for your consideration:
StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath
Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham
Go Put Your Strengths To Work by Marcus Buckingham
The One Thing You Need To Know by Marcus Buckingham
The Truth About You by Marcus Buckingham
The Element by Ken Robinson, Ph.D.
48 Days to the Work You Love: Preparing for the New Normal by Dan Miller
Instinct: Tapping Your Entrepreneurial DNA To Achieve Your Business Goals by Thomas L. Harrison
Soar With Your Strengths by Donald O. Clifton & Paula Nelson
As you can see, there are lots of resources to help us in our journey toward self-discovery. But I’ll warn you. It’s not easy. And it may require that you spend some time alone. Many people are uneasy being alone, but unless you’re willing to disconnect enough to work on YOU…you’ll likely spend most of your life as a spectator. Nobody wins unless you participate by doing meaningful, positive work. The world is better when you contribute.
