Yes, it’s true. Lisa Norris is retiring from the City of Grand Prairie, Texas!
For those who know Lisa, the news might come as a surprise. After all, she’s one of the most energetic, optimistic, and enthusiastic leaders you’ll ever meet. Retirement doesn’t exactly seem to fit her personality.
But here we are.
In this episode of Grow Great, Lisa and I sit down to talk about her retirement, what this transition means, and what might come next.
A Career Devoted to Serving Others
Lisa has devoted a significant part of her professional life to serving the City of Grand Prairie. Along the way, she’s helped develop people, strengthen teams, navigate organizational challenges, and contribute to a culture where leadership development matters.
I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Lisa, including our collaboration on Grow Me Grand, the City’s leadership development initiative supported by City Manager Bill Hills and Deputy City Manager Cheryl DeLeon.
That work reflects something Lisa and I have long believed: organizations improve when their people improve, and helping people grow is among the most important responsibilities of leadership.
Retirement Is a Transition, Not a Finish Line
There’s something interesting about retirement, especially for people who have invested so much of themselves in their work.
For many leaders, their professional responsibilities become deeply intertwined with their identity. They’ve spent years solving problems, making decisions, developing people, and contributing to something bigger than themselves.
Then comes a moment when they begin considering what life might look like without the same daily responsibilities.
What will they miss? What won’t they miss? And perhaps most importantly, what do they want the next chapter of life to look like?
Retirement doesn’t have to mean slowing down, losing purpose, or abandoning the things that matter most.
Sometimes it simply means having greater freedom to decide where to invest your time, energy, and talents.
The Impact of Leadership Lasts
One of the great things about leadership is that its impact can continue long after a leader leaves a particular position.
The people we encourage, develop, mentor, and support carry those experiences forward. They influence others. They become better leaders themselves. And the impact multiplies.
That’s the kind of legacy worth building.
It’s also why Lisa and I continue to believe so strongly in the philosophy behind Grow Great:
Leadership is doing for others what they can’t do for themselves.
A job title may eventually change. A career may transition into something different. But the opportunity to positively influence other people never really disappears.
What’s Next For Lisa?
That’s part of the fun of this conversation.
Lisa is approaching a significant transition, but knowing her, I suspect there will be no shortage of energy, enthusiasm, or possibilities ahead. And I’m especially glad that her retirement doesn’t mean the end of our conversations on Grow Great.
Join us for this episode as we talk about Lisa’s retirement from Grand Prairie and the next chapter of her journey.
Congratulations, Lisa! And thanks for continuing to help us Grow Great.
