It’s our first Thanksgiving Day week here at Grow Great and we’re thankful to share it with you. Lisa and I have been honored to have your time and attention. As our audience has grown we’ve been overwhelmed with positive feedback. We appreciate each one of you.

Today, we have a brief but important conversation about the human side of leadership…because, well, we’re all humans. As we gather with family and friends this week it’s not just our desire to celebrate with others that join us, but it’s the realization that each one of us is going through something. Maybe it’s enormous – so much so that we don’t know how we’ll possibly be able to endure it. Maybe it’s slight, causing us some minor discomfort. We all have these moments in time when we face an unwelcome difficulty. These are the times when gratitude can serve us better. So lean into your challenges, look for opportunities for personal growth and be thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Be well. Do good. Grow great!

Stop Giving Them The Straw

Stop Giving Them The Straw

quote about giving people the strawIt all started after I texted this image (and quote) to Lisa. We chuckled and then had a serious chat about recording today’s conversation.

“You can’t keep getting mad at people for sucking the life out of you if you keep giving them the straw.”
-Unknown

Much of our work in helping others revolves around assisting people to figure out how to accept personal responsibility. Leadership growth hits a magical upward curve whenever we find ways to incorporate all the leadership ingredients:

  • Humility
  • Curiosity
  • Knowledge
  • Understanding
  • Compassion

Join us as we dive more deeply into the negative feelings we can feel resulting from the behavior (performance, etc.) of others and simultaneously fail to own the outcomes of our own lives. Whether we’re a boss, employee, leader, or team member – it happens to all of us. Let’s avoid making that our way of life – professionally or personally. It’s time to stop giving them the straw!

Be well. Do good. Grow great!

7 Sentences You May Wish You Had Read Sooner

Weeks ago Lisa came across this social media post by Steven Bartlett, a UK-based entrepreneur/podcaster.

Steven Bartlett's 7 Sentences

We decided to do an episode about each one. Mostly, it provoked us to think about what sentences we would write – things we wish we had known sooner. Jokingly, I told Lisa that my list would be much longer than seven. How about you? If you crafted a list like this, how many items would it contain and what would they be? We’d love to hear from you. Just use the CONTACT page and share it with us.

How Do You Reinvent Yourself?

How Do You Reinvent Yourself?

As a Director of HR Lisa Norris, my co-host, regularly encounters professionals searching for insights about how they might reinvent themselves professionally. It can be daunting trying to figure out what skills, insights, and experiences you have that may be highly valuable if you could only figure out ways to translate them into a new arena.

My work constantly focuses on the ideal outcome people want to achieve. It’s personal to each of us, and subject to change because our lives aren’t static. The reasons for reinvention are as varied as our personalities, but the challenges can be quite common to any of us pursuing such a goal.

Today, let’s try to provoke some profitable thoughts that you can apply the pursuing your own ideal outcome. During our conversation, Lisa mentions the Zero Risk Assessment, a tool she utilizes in her work.

Giving Your Team A Story (Individually & Collectively)

Giving Your Team A Story (Individually & Collectively)

Last week we discusses the power of your story – and how a chapter doesn’t fully define your story. Today, we’re going to focus on your leadership, specifically your job to provide a story for your team so they can understand where they fit and how they can make a positive difference.

Years ago, as a young leader, I was taught by an old seasoned HR professional that a big part of my job was to do that for people. “If you don’t give them a good story,” she told me, “they’ll write one of their own and it won’t be good.” She knew most of us immediately think the worst. If the boss calls us to his office, we don’t instantly think, “Great! We’re getting a promotion or a raise.” We likely think, “Oh no! What did I do wrong!” That’s the kind of story we tend to tell ourselves. As leaders, we have to remember that so we can be more intentional to give our team members a better story.

A Chapter Doesn't Tell Your Whole Story

“Just because someone came in on this chapter of your life doesn’t mean they know your whole story.”one chapter doesn't tell your story

Today we have a conversation – a personal, intimate conversation – about Lisa’s difficult chapter. It was during this chapter I was first introduced to her. As you’ll discover, it was just a chapter – maybe a few – but it was far from being her whole story.
